Going Out With....#4
Strange Bar Sunday shares their Peter Pan-esque wisdom.
Going Out With Strange Bar Sunday
Not long ago, I made the discovery of an Instagram account called Strange Bar Sunday1 After some further research (stalking), I learned that Strange Bar is two anonymous dudes who browse many a bars across Chicagoland and write about their findings. Finally! I thought, proof that there are others just like me out there, nosy and more than willing to explore unmarked places to-and-fro, especially in my wonderful and precious Midwestern hometown, privy to places full of stories and interesting neighbors and cuckoo energy.
And so it goes, not long after becoming Strange Bar Sunday’s most regular Instagram reply guy, including begging them to let me hang out with them (little do they know, I speak fluent bro), they kindly agreed to this interview. Let’s see what these boneheads have to say…
What is going out?
It really isn’t one thing. Different reasons for different situations. Could be going to unwind after a shift, could be seeing Black Sabbath with your best boy, or one fine Sunday to witness weirdness and see where the day takes you. We would, however, never go to watch sports.
Where do you go? Are you a regular anywhere?
We have been drinking out and about for 20 years and have had rotating regular status at many places over the years. The Two Way, Longman, Rainbo, Frank & Mary’s, Bob Inn, Continental, to name a few, but we have homies behind many bars in this fine city.
When is the best time to go out? When do you come home?
Whenever you feel like & whenever you feel like it.
Why do you go out?
Kiss the girls
How do you go out? Do you have routines, rituals, remedies; favorite songs, forms of transportation, outfits; what’s in your bag, how do you leave your room, pets, household
We just leave.
We like to have a few 2am’s in mind and always a 4am to end up at.
9:23pm Bong Rip
9:24pm smoke a cigarette
9:27pm Sidewalk beer
9:33-??? Eat mushrooms & go to the bar
We haven’t cleaned our rooms or changed our clothes in 30 years.
Extra: If you were a bar, who would you be?
Moe’s Tavern.
Strange Bar Sunday is two tight bros from way back when, terminally diagnosed with Peter Pan syndrome. We venture to the less explored taverns of Chicago, IL. We’re looking for the relics, the musty dusties & the moldy oldies, the B-Sides. We enjoy meeting genuine characters and hearing their stories. Pretty much, we like talking to weird people in weird places.
These mofos have 27.9k followers, now that’s my kind of influencer. A girl can dream…whatever….I can’t even count that high…

“especially in my wonderful and precious Midwestern hometown, privy to places full of stories and interesting neighbors and cuckoo energy.”
There’s something so fond in that — the way a hometown can feel both ordinary and wonderfully strange. Full of quirks, characters, and stories that only make sense because they’re yours.
